We had the opportunity to interview Prof.Chris Elliott (Queen's University Belfast) at the Recent Advances in Food Analysis (RAFA2024) event in Prague. In this discussion, our Editor-in-Chief delves into Prof. Elliott’s recent presentation on the vital role of analytical chemistry in verifying the origin of soya to fight deforestation. With the Deforestation EU rule set to take effect in the coming year, food processors and traders will face new challenges in proving that their products do not come from deforested areas. Prof. Elliott also shared insights on how similar methodologies will be used for other commodities, such as coffee.
