Innovative AI chatbot set to revolutionize allergen management in the food industry

Finnebrogue, one of the UK's leading food producers, is set to trial a generative AI chatbot designed to assist employees with allergen-related inquiries. The initiative, in collaboration with the supply chain management tech firm Foods Connected, Bia Analytical and Queen’s University Belfast, aims to enhance decision-making processes by providing quick and accurate responses to employee questions about allergens.

Queen’s University Belfast will contribute by developing a machine learning model to analyze global soya samples, helping to trace the origins of soya amid growing concerns over deforestation linked to its production.
Bia Analytical will then create a rapid testing method for soya origin based on this model, allowing manufacturers to verify the origins of soya in real-time.

This initiative is one of nearly 100 innovative projects that have received financial support as the UK government aims to enhance productivity and stimulate economic growth through AI, benefiting all citizens. The funding comes from the UKRI Technology Missions Fund, which is dedicated to maintaining the UK’s leadership in emerging AI technologies. These projects are facilitated by the Innovate UK BridgeAI programme, which also provides access to training, scientific expertise, specialized AI guidance, and fosters collaboration between businesses and developers.

In a time where sustainability and food safety are paramount, this innovative project represents a significant step forward for the whole food industry.
As the food sector continues to evolve, the integration of AI tools like this chatbot may become essential for maintaining safety and sustainability standards in food production.
