Innovation in food packaging: New review highlights safety risks and analytical challenges

A recent review published in the peer-reviewed journal Comprehensive Reviews in Food Science and Food Safety explores the safety of alternative food packaging, co-authored by experts from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and Danone. The article delves into the risks and opportunities presented by recycled and bio-based materials, reusable packaging, and cutting-edge innovations like nanotechnologies and active packaging.

Packaging plays a vital role in preserving food safety and reducing waste, but the environmental impact of traditional packaging materials, particularly plastics, cannot be overlooked. Moreover, the potential migration of chemicals from packaging into food raises health concerns, especially for vulnerable groups like young children. The review emphasizes the importance of understanding these risks to protect consumer health.

Efforts to address the environmental challenges of food packaging are underway, with a strong emphasis on a circular economy model. While new packaging solutions are emerging, it is essential to identify and mitigate potential food safety risks associated with these alternatives. This proactive approach will not only protect consumer health but also foster further innovation in the industry.

The review identifies several food safety hazards associated with new packaging materials, such as the risk of allergenicity from proteins in bio-based materials and potential microbiological and chemical contaminants in reusable packaging. Additionally, recycled materials may contain substances not intended for food contact, further complicating safety assessments.

The authors stress the importance of improving analytical methods to keep up with the diverse range of substances utilized in new packaging materials. Adequate assessment of these substances is crucial to ensuring they do not pose health risks to consumers. The lack of harmonized global regulations adds to the challenges faced by stakeholders in the food industry, making it imperative to establish clearer guidelines.

To address these complexities, the article advocates for a One Health approach, which evaluates the impacts of packaging on human health, animal welfare, and environmental sustainability collectively.

This review is part of a broader partnership between FAO and Danone aimed at promoting sustainable agricultural practices and enhancing access to diverse, healthier food options. One key aspect of this collaboration is the ongoing exchange of information regarding emerging food safety issues and trends.
