France: Controversy erupts over imported eggs with antibiotic residues banned in the EU

A significant controversy has emerged in France regarding the sale of eggs imported from Ukraine, raising serious health and regulatory concerns among industry professionals and consumers alike. The French National Egg Organisation (CNPO) has condemned the presence of these eggs—produced by caged hens and containing banned antibiotic residues—on supermarket shelves across the nation.

Since spring 2025, the CNPO has alerted authorities and the public about the risks associated with these imports, which do not meet European Union (EU) health standards. The organization argues that the sale of these eggs not only jeopardizes consumer health but also undermines the integrity of the French egg industry.

In August, multiple health warnings highlighted the detection of antibiotic residues in Ukrainian eggs—substances banned in the EU for over 15 years. The CNPO is urging public authorities to enhance compliance controls on these eggs to safeguard the health of consumers in France.

The situation has sparked outrage among French retailers, who have been criticized for maintaining double standards. While they have committed to phasing out eggs from caged hens in their own supply chains, they continue to sell imported Ukrainian eggs. This inconsistency is viewed as a clear case of unfair competition, potentially damaging local farmers who are striving to meet increasing consumer demand for ethically produced eggs.

In light of these developments, the CNPO is urging the French government to strengthen regulations governing imported eggs. They argue that a firm equivalence of standards is essential to protect both consumer health and the livelihoods of local farmers. The French Minister of Agriculture has echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the need for enhanced vigilance and control measures to prevent the entry of non-compliant products into the French market.

As this scandal unfolds, the future of Ukraine's egg imports remains uncertain, with calls for immediate regulatory action and greater accountability from retailers growing louder. The CNPO continues to advocate for a fair marketplace that prioritizes the health and safety of consumers while supporting local agricultural practices.
