EFSA reduces exposure limits for byproduct TFA
European regulators have significantly tightened dietary safety standards for trifluoroacetic acid (TFA)—a persistent chemical byproduct formed when certain pesticides and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) break down in the environment.
Following a comprehensive scientific re-evaluation, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) reduced the acceptable daily intake (ADI) for TFA from 0.05 milligrams per kilogram of body weight down to 0.014 mg/kg, making the new limit roughly 3.5 times stricter than previous thresholds. In addition, scientists established an acute reference dose of 0.07 mg/kg to evaluate short-term exposure risks.
The decision to lower the safety benchmark stems from recent findings indicating that TFA exposure can disrupt concentrations of thyroxine, a vital hormone produced by the thyroid gland to regulate metabolic processes.
To establish these updated guidelines, EFSA synthesized evidence from multiple channels, including:
• National-level pesticide assessments across EU member states
• Classification proposals reviewed by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA)
• Industry submissions and 177 public feedback submissions gathered during a late-2024 consultation period
Because questions remain regarding potential long-term risks—such as carcinogenicity, developmental immune toxicity, and chronic health impact—experts added an extra safety factor when calculating the official daily intake allowance.
TFA enters ecosystems primarily through agricultural spray runoff and chemical degradation, ultimately reaching groundwater, soil, and consumer crops. While EU member states already mandate water testing and food monitoring for PFAS compounds, the European Commission and national policymakers will use these stricter guidelines to craft updated safety regulations and agricultural limits.
EFSA and ECHA are currently conducting a joint research initiative investigating how agricultural chemicals breakdown into TFA and accumulate in natural ecosystems, with final results expected by summer 2026.
