Alarmingly high pesticide cocktails found in EU strawberries

A new report by Greenpeace Italia and Pesticide Action Network (PAN) Europe has sounded the alarm over chemical contamination in European strawberries. After analyzing 41 locally produced samples across 11 European Union countries, researchers uncovered a worrying prevalence of highly toxic chemical residues in conventionally grown fruit.  

On average, conventionally farmed EU strawberries contain residues of 3.5 different pesticide active ingredients. The most frequently detected substances fall into some of the most dangerous legal categories in the EU, including endocrine disruptors, PFAS, and neurotoxins.  

The highest average contamination rates were found in Slovenia (7 residues per sample), Belgium (6), and Ireland (5). Individual samples from Belgium, Hungary, and Ireland contained up to 8-9 different chemical residues. Conversely, only 22% of conventional samples were completely residue-free, while all organic samples tested clean.  

The study highlights a significant gap in the enforcement of EU safety regulations.  
Over a third of the samples contained fludioxonil (39%) and cyprodinil (33%)—two endocrine disruptors that EU regulations mandated for market withdrawal years ago.  
PFAS were detected in 58% of the samples. These chemicals degrade into trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), recently classified by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) as toxic to reproduction.  
Over half (56%) of the strawberries tested contained pesticides classified as "Candidates for Substitution," which member states were legally required to phase out starting in 2011.  

Furthermore, nearly 17% of the samples contained neurotoxic pesticides, raising sharp concerns regarding children’s health, given their high consumption of the fruit.  

Environmental groups emphasize that current EU safety frameworks are inadequate. Since 2005, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has failed to deliver a methodology to evaluate the cumulative "cocktail effect" of multiple simultaneous pesticides. Additionally, legal residue limits for strawberries are often two to three times higher than those for apples, despite chronic exposure being linked to long-term illnesses like infertility.  

However, the report notes a glimmer of hope: in France and the Netherlands, 50% and 66% of conventional samples respectively were residue-free, proving that cleaner conventional farming is entirely possible.  

Greenpeace and PAN Europe are calling on EU member states to strictly enforce existing laws rather than weakening them, and to support farmers transitioning to non-chemical pest management. For consumers—particularly pregnant women and children—the organizations recommend choosing organic strawberries to eliminate pesticide exposure.
