Male infertility linked to glyphosate-based herbicides exposure
Glyphosate (GLY), the main ingredient in Glyphosate-Based Herbicides (GBHs) and the world's most common herbicide and weed killer, is under scrutiny for its potential impact on male fertility despite GLY authorization in European agriculture has been extended until 2034.
Researchers in France, in an article published in the journal of Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety on June 15th, 2024, investigated the presence of GLY and its main metabolite, amino-methyl-phosphonic acid (AMPA), in semen and blood plasma samples from 128 infertile men. They employed advanced techniques for detection and also assessed markers of oxidative stress and DNA damage, both known contributors to infertility. The goal was to explore connections between GLY levels and sperm quality.
The results revealed a troubling correlation: men with detectable GLY levels exhibited higher levels of oxidative stress and DNA damage in human semen, with concentrations four times higher than in blood plasma. Interestingly, AMPA was undetectable in both samples. A strong positive correlation emerged: higher blood GLY levels corresponded with increased levels of both seminal GLY and a DNA damage marker, 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), in semen. Additionally, men with detectable GLY had significantly higher levels of overall oxidative stress, an imbalance linked to cell damage, in both blood and semen. This suggests GLY exposure could not only harm the men themselves but also potentially affect their offspring.
These findings raise serious concerns about the safety of GLY, particularly considering its authorization and widespread use in European agriculture. Regulatory authorities must consider this emerging evidence linking GLY exposure to adverse reproductive outcomes and take appropriate steps to safeguard public health. The study urges for stricter regulations and a re-evaluation of GLY's safety standards. Further research is crucial to definitively understand the long-term effects of GLY on human health and fertility. According to the authors, until more conclusive data emerges, the precautionary principle should guide future decisions regarding GLY-based products usage to protect public health.
