EU: new guidance against fraud in the agri-food chain

The European Commission has just published a guidance on fighting fraudulent and deceptive practices in the agri-food chain.

Food fraud can impact both businesses and consumers, with outcomes primarily being financial, particularly when related to quality. Nonetheless, such fraudulent actions may hinder the EU Single Market's functionality and even pose risks to human, animal, or plant health, as well as the environment.

A team of scientists from the Joint Research Centre (the EU Commission's science and knowledge service) authored the technical report. They conducted a project between 2020 and 2022, gathering information on potential fraud risks identified by eight Member State authorities through pilot and fact-finding studies, as well as control methods to detect dishonest and deceptive practices in the agri-food sector.

The document outlines challenges, opportunities, and best practices related to the implementation of Article 9(2) of Regulation (EU) 2017/625.

The technical report's objective is to encourage consistent interpretation and application of Article 9(2) of Regulation (EU) 2017/625 provisions.
