PhD Roberto Piro

He is head of the Experimental Chemistry Laboratory and director of SCS8 - Enhancement of food production of the IZSVe.  

He graduated in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology at the University of Padua (1985), subsequently specializing in Nuclear Chemistry (1996) and in Chemical Control and Analysis Methodologies (2001).

After research experiences at two pharmaceutical companies (Glaxo now GSK and Fidia), he worked in the chemistry department of the IZSVe and then moved to the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of Lombardy and Emilia Romagna, where he was head of the department of Chemistry applied to food technologies and food of plant origin and feed.  

His research activity mainly concerns the composition, characterization and safety of food and feed, carried out by searching for residues of veterinary drugs, heavy metal pesticides, food additives, nutritional components, shelf life and mycotoxins. More recently, his research interests have turned to non-target analysis methodologies and fingerprinting-based approaches.
