2017 fipronil case: the defendants in Belgium's largest-ever food fraud trial will pay a €23 million fine

A court in Antwerp condemned two men and one woman accused of being at the heart of Belgium's largest-ever food scam. The three were among seven people charged and four firms accused of using the pesticide Fipronil to sanitize chicken farms. The pollution created by the chemical resulted in the death of two million chickens and the contamination of 77 million eggs.

According to the court, one of the defendants failed to notify the poultry farmers about the composition of the substance he was using, which was efficient in reducing pests if not for the minor issue of contamination with a prohibited substance. According to witnesses, he informed prospective clients that the substance his firm used was strengthened with menthol and eucalyptus. The three must pay a total of €23 million in damages to the federal food safety agency, while one of them was sentenced to three years in prison.
